The Case for OHVD

Why the Defender Makes Dollars and Sense

When you do the math, the Defender™ makes real dollars and sense considering the potential loss of life or serious injury, damage avoided and other related costs prevented from an over height vehicle incident.

There is general agreement that over-height vehicles (OHV) are a serious issue.  In a study by the University of Maryland, of 29 state DOTs surveyed, 62% identified OHV accidents as a significant problem. The most effective way to address this problem is through an automated OHVD system. The US DOT’s own ITS Benefits and Costs Impact Ratings state that OHVD systems have a positive impact for transportation authorities.

Based on past experience, the cost of doing nothing is far too high.

  • According to a study in the Journal of Performance of Constructed Facilities, over a 38 year period, out of the 79 bridge failures in the US, 14% were caused by over height truck collisions

  • According to research from the University of MD, the average damage costs for 4 states that were surveyed over a five year period for OHV accidents ranged from $250,000 to $500,000.

  • VDOT reported that one critical overpass of I-95 at Fredericksburg had at least one OHV collision per year for the last decade since 2007. One bridge section has been struck so frequently that if hit again it will need replacement with an estimated cost of about $20 million.

The Defender™ pays for itself 50 over versus the cost of an incident or accident.
